ALT Linux

What is ALT Linux?

ALT Linux is a popular russian linux distribution, but installable in other languages as well.

It sprang off in spring 2001 as a russian edition of Mandrake. As it evolved it was split into several branches all based on the Master branch:

  • Master - the main distribution
  • Compact - a compacted version for home and office use, packing less applications
  • Junior - a more compact distribution targeted especially at beginners
  • Castle - a Protected Server branch
  • Utes-K - special branch focussing on a high security level
