I don't think we need the panel type, because the fact is that everything which is in the "Flexview/FFS IPS" section is IPS and everything else (at least in the color TFT section) is TN (Twisted Nematic), it's as simple as that. Maybe an introductory note could do the trick.

I added a "Flexview" note to the SXGA+ and UXGA Flexview models and put the R52 15" SXGA+ display on a separate line, because it is _not_ a Flexview.

Hei, thanks for the correction. Are you sure, though, about the brightness and contrast ratios? During my research it seemed to me that Flexviews have 400:1 contrast. So probably the other models should go together with the A31p.

And besides that...do you know the values for the R52? If you don't we shouldn't just assume that it's 200 and 250:1.

Please comment.

I'm sure about the brightness - it's 200 nits for both the Flexview and the non-Flexview on the R52, according to the Tabook. As for the constrast values, the Tabook doesn't tell them, but I looked at the sites of IDTech and LG-Philips, who manufacture the Flexview panels, and indeed it seems that you are right and the contrast is 400:1. I changed it.

P.S. I guess one could find more information about the different screens by retrieving the part numbers for the LCD panels from Lenovo's site, finding the manufacturers and looking at their technical docs, as I did with the Flexview panels. At the moment I don't have time to do it, though.

Hei,

how do you know who manufactures the panels and what model it is? Is this a broader source where we can get info for all the models from or do you just know it fro the R52?

From Thinkpad Service Partsyou can find out the manufacturer of each LCD panel for each Thinkpad model. Finding the exact panel model based on IBM's part number may be tricky, but in case of the Flexview it was easy, because the manufacturers only have one 15" SXGA+ IPS (wide viewing angles) panel that matches the characteristics of the Flexview.

P.S. Evidently, the new T60p UXGA LCD panels are manufactured by Boe-Hydis, whose 200nits UXGA panel is rated 500:1 contrast on their site, so I put T60p in a separate line.

OK, I managed to sort out one more thing. The X41T and X60s displays - X41T uses a wide-viewing angle FFS panel from Boe-Hydis. I got the manufacturer specs, and based on them the contrast ratio is 450:1. The X60s is uses an interesting technology called "Ultralight". So far I don't know any details, but it's safe to assume that it's a different display, so I put them on separate lines.

I'm thinking two things: first, we may want to split between the regular TFT displays and the Tablet PC TFT displays, seeing as the latter have additional features, like being able to write on them with a pen. Also, we should have footnotes or maybe separate entries explaining the benefits certain technologies, such as Flexview/IPS or FFS, which essentially is enhanced IPS, patented by Boe-Hydis. The fact that these selected panels are manufactured using different technology than your standard TN panel, giving them great viewing angles and better colors really makes the laptops that use them stand out, in my opinion, and maybe it deserves to be explained further.

I think, the X41 Tablet's display should NOT go on a separate entry, because the digitizer is a separate device that is listed in the input section. It has nothing to do with the display, it just comes in the same casing. Of course i see an argument from the other direction, but i think we are more clean like this.

I like the new layout of the pages. I'll start adding whatever info I can find when I get the time.

Lets say I have a thinkpad t40 with a 14.1" 1024x768 panel. Can I purchase the 1400x1050 14.1" panel for the T40 and connect it to my laptop and have it work? Or is there more to it than that?

Should be no problem. There are several types of 14.1" SXGA+ panels used in the T40 series, and the dimensions of all match. You may need to replace more than just the panel, i.e. inverter, connectors... The Hardware Maintenance Manualshould tell you what and how.

I think we should add at least one more column with the IBM FRU PN, as that would seem to be the only unique identifier.

For instance, the T2* series have a whole slew of 13.3" XGA displays listed from different manufacturers, and in some cases (LG) a manufacturer is listed more then once with the only comment in the HMM being that some are 'light weight'.

Also, I was wondering about adding a column with the response time of the display. I know that data is mostly marketing hype, but so is brightness and contrast.

Nice ideas. FRUs are very easy to fetch, at least. That would allow filling the manufacturer column automatically as well. I suspect that different FRUs on different models _can_ be used to describe the same panel in some cases, but hopefully not vice versa.

Response time will only be available for a small selection of panels, for which we'll manage to find actual manufacturer specs (mostly recent panels), but it wouldn't hurt having a column.

I added two columns

I think contrast and brightness are less marketing hype than response time, though they are. ;-) However, how about another column for the panel type, like IPS etc.? I think that's interesting information because different technologies have different side effects.
