http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Q2QAK The restore function on the above CD is apparently not capable of reading backups made by Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0 (Even if the backup is the initial image from the preboot partition, just making a copy of it to other media with RRU 4 makes this CD unable to restore the backup.)
Lessons learned: When the system is in a clean state (right after getting it), boot from a livecd, and use dd to image the whole dang hard drive to somewhere else.
