Why doesn't 

bgcolor=green|yes

work? In a table, it changes the cell color but sets it content to 

yes

What would you want to achive with that? Shell yes be a default in case no parameter is given? You can't do that. You would have to use a helper template like Template:ine.

According to the docs of recent MediaWiki versions, it should work. Maybe not yet implemented in this MediaWiki.
