#Those who have taken apart their T43s or replaced the hard drives noted that the HD is not physically SATA, even though it is supported under Linux as SATA. [http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2005-April/025535.html ref] The T43 hardware maintenance manual describes the hard drive as IDE and not SATA.

#While the physical disk is PATA (IDE), it is accessed through a SATA controller and a SATA-to-PATA bridge. It thus appears as a SATA device to the operating system, which casues some [[SATA and Linux|problems under Linux]]. The SATA-to-PATA bridge also necessitates drive firmware changes, making these systems selective about the system disk: ThinkPad-branded disks have the necessary firmware, but not so for third-party drives and some IBM/Hitachi drives not sold under the ThinkPad brand. Using such drives as the system drive may cause an "error 2010" warning at boot time and may entail reliability or performance issues.  See [http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t<nowiki>=</nowiki>11059 Firmware Problems with Seagate 100g Drive on T43].
#Word to the wise: the T43 uses a SATA->PATA converter and PATA drives.  Unfortunately, the drive's firmware is modified by IBM for performance and stability reasons. In general, you can install a non-IBM branded HD as the primary drive, but it will give a warning at boot time.  See [http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t<nowiki>=</nowiki>11059 Firmware Problems with Seagate 100g Drive on T43].

  1. While the physical disk is PATA (IDE), it is accessed through a SATA controller and a SATA-to-PATA bridge. It thus appears as a SATA device to the operating system, which casues some problems under Linux. See =11059 Firmware Problems with Seagate 100g Drive on T43.
