ATI Mobility Radeon 9600

This is an ATI video adapter

Features

  • Chipset: ATI RV350 (M10)
  • PCI ID: 1002:4c66
  • AGP 4X
  • 32 or 64MB DDR-SDRAM video memory
  • External VGA up to: 1920x1200 (see details)

Linux driver - OpenSource

This adapter is supported by recent versions of the 'radeon' driver as found in X.Org and XFree86. The fglrx driver should also work.

ThinkPad LCD

Display on the internal LCD works as long as you set the monitor settings correct

External VGA port

Most recent drivers for MS Windows function up to 1920x1200 (personally tested on a Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW, looked great). However, officially supported resolution is 1280x1024 (in Windows).

SVideo port

SVideo out is supported by the ati.2 driver from the GATOS project.
Read here how to set it up.

3D acceleration with the open source driver

Tino Keitel had a lot of success with the recent r300 DRI drivers. These are drivers that have 3D acceleration even though they are Open Source. Tino writes this on the linux-thinkpad mailing list:

http://r300.sourceforge.net/R300.php
You need the CVS version of Mesa, as well as a patched X.org 6.8.2 (or X.org CVS), and the r300 driver from the URL above, which also contains a README with detailed instructions.
In the current state, it may be hard for non-experienced users, but there seems to be progress towards merging the r300 driver into the DRM and Mesa CVS, which may be included in X.org some day, so this should work out of the box.

Linux driver - Proprietary

The fglrx driver adds 3D acceleration.

FreeBSD driver - open source

With RELENG_6 it is possible to get this card working with a reasonable level of ease. First you must apply this patch: http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/dri/r300-drm.diff to your kernel source and compile a new kernel. I have only tested using this as a module. It works as the simple drm/radeon module. Once that is done install x11-servers/xorg-server-snap and graphics/dri-devel on top of a normal Xorg installation. With all that you SHOULD have dri working on a mobility 9600. Tested on a T42.
