Thanks for pointing out the alternative to lightwatch.pl, typing the password (or swiping your finger, nowadays ;)) while the LCD is off is not much fun. I was about to find out how to hack xscreensaver so that it issues some status in xscreensaver-command when the password dialog is shown, but the source code didn't make much sense to me on a quick glance. But I'm not into X11 programming etc. at all... anyway, you saved me a lot of time fiddling around here.<br />
