=== What is ALT Linux? ===
ALT Linux is a popular russian linux distribution, but installable in other languages as well.

It sprang off in spring 2001 as a russian edition of [[:Category:Mandrake|Mandrake]]. As it evolved it was split into several branches all based on the Master branch:
* Master - the main distribution
* Compact - a compacted version for home and office use, packing less applications
* Junior - a more compact distribution targeted especially at beginners
* Castle - a Protected Server branch
* Utes-K - special branch focussing on a high security level
