Adding a new ThinkPad series or category to ThinkWiki

How to add a new thinkpad category to ThinkWiki
This page is a checklist for you, proud owner of a (probably very new) ThinkPad series or model that is not listed in ThinkWiki yet, who wants to help enhance this WiKi with information about the new machine.

# Make sure you are aware of the guidelines for adding new pages, described in Help:Editing;
# If the ThinkPad is a new series, you will have to create a page for it and add it to the Category:Models and to the series page. Please look at some of the already existing pages to use as a template;
# If the ThinkPad is a new major model in a series, you will have to create a page for it and add a link to the new page in the relevant series page.
# Locate your ThinkPad model on Lenovo's "download and support" site, track down and fill in the information on the following pages:
## BIOS versions, download page and name (this information helps supporting users a lot);
## DMI system ID information (this information is very important for the Linux kernel driver writers);
## Default meanings of special keys (this information is important to the thinkpad-acpi kernel driver maintainer);
# Look for pages describing hardware and issues that are relevant to your ThinkPad model, and make sure they link back to the new category page. Looking at the category page for ThinkPad models of the same generation as yours will give you an starting point.

Yes, it is a lot of work, and you don't have to do it in one sitting, but it will make ThinkWiki a much better site.

expand this page more, I am sure I left out a lot of stuff

X6 Tablet UltraBase
The ThinkPad X6 Tablet UltraBase is a portable dock for the X60 Tablet and X61 Tablet ThinkPads providing extra ports as well as a bay for an optical drive and a set of stereo speakers. Containing a full featured UltraBay Slim slot, it provides flexibility in drive choice as well as the option of a secondary battery for extended working time on the road.

Features
* Passthrough ports:
** Ethernet (RJ45)
** Modem (RJ11)
** USB (four ports)
** VGA
** Serial (DB9-M)
** Parallel (DB25-F)
** Microphone
** Headphone
* Ultrabay Slim
* Stereo speakers
* Kensington security hole

Pros & Cons
* Positives: Expansion capability, portable
* Negatives: makes the ThinkPad quite thick
* Compatibility: ,
* Warranty: Three Years

Flaws
* Using Windows XP Tablet Edition one may stop the optical (CD/DVD) drive, remove the slim component, insert an alternate (HDD) slim component, and resume operations. This feature is not available under Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) linux as of this writing. One may unmount and eject an ultrabay slim HDD using either command line or desktop tools. However, there is no way to unmount and eject an optical drive. This is due, in part, to the way that CD/DVD devices are made known to the OS when media get inserted and are in limbo without media present. NOTE that there are several attempts to implement a CD/DVD stop, but they rely on detailed knowledge of device identification to the running kernel and complex command line statements.
* It would be nice if there were external USB or Firewire enclosures to accept the Ultrabay Slim components. Currently, this is not the case. Other vendors, notably DELL, offer an external enclosure for some editions of their drive-bay components.

</div>
|}

UltraBay Slim
The UltraBay Slim slot in this dock is a full featured one and supports hot swapping with all UltraBay Slim drives. You can also feed it with the UltraBay Slim battery pack to extend the overall battery life time.

Flaws
* lacks promiscuous mode sniffing capability (however, works OK in Linux (2.6.27 onward) with aircrack), good signal strength meter (see notes "sharing Experience" at the bottom of link below).Talk:Intel_PRO/Wireless_4965AGN_Mini-PCI_Express_Adapter

* Iwl4965/iwlagn driver can cause kernel panics in some cases on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and Intrepid 8.10 (and possibly others). See Intrepid release note and Launchpad entry. Some sources say this is fixed in linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic, while others still report kernel panics with the backported module.

* [iwl4965] Wireless enabled/activity LED does not light under ubuntu hardy (8.04.1). There are reports that this is fixed in intrepid (8.10). Front panel switch ... at front under the keyboard ... does disable both wifi and bluetooth. The bluetooth LED cycles on/off with the switch appropriately. Only 802.11 wifi LED is problematic.
