== Installation ==

You should set the graphics mode as in the Video section below. The [[Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300]] need proprietary firmware, I therefore recommend to use an iso image with the propretary firmware.

== Video ==

Three option are given in the BIOS:
- Integrated (the integrated Intel card)
- Discrete ([[the NVIDIA Quadro 2000M]], in my case, or the [[NVIDIA Quadro 1000M]])
- NVIDIA Optimus ( use both card for more power efficient system)

To have VGA, Display Port and the usb 3.0 port on the back working the Nvidia card needs to be on. That leaves us two option: Discrete or Optimus. Optimus is not officially supported by Nvidia but the bumbleebee project offers partial support but for the w520 is not full support at the moment (impossible to use VGA and Display Port). Therefore the choice is to select Discrete.
The next step is select drivers: nvidia vs nouveau. The nvidia are good but not free and the integration with the system not optimal. Nouveau offers 3d acceleration but is not as good as nvidia.
In order to install nouveau 3d drivers you need to compile the kernel found here (or just the nouveau module) [git://anongit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6].The module update should be merged in 3.1 kernel.. Then you need to install libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental (7.11~0-2), the one from experimental repository.
You can now test compiz and you will see all the effect working.

== Networking ==

Bluetooth works out of the box.

== Webcam ==

The integrated webcam works out of the box.

== Finger print reader ==

I have installed libfprint0, fprint-demo and libpam-fprint (from unstable).

The fprint-demo works fine but when I try to enroll a finger a get the following error:

"enroll failed with error -22"

I have already submitted the bug to the bug tracking sistem with the following ID: Bug#633633.

The W520 comes with a special [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-76762.html 170W AC adapter (P/N 0A36227)] that is currently not shipped with any other Thinkpad. Note that it is different from the W700 [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70684 170W AC adapter (P/N 41R4421)]. The W520 AC adapter is larger but lighter than the W510 135W AC adapter.

Most newer (20V) Thinkpad AC adapters have a compatible plug with the W520, but not all of them will work due to power constraints. The following table shows which AC adapters can be used to run the W520:

The 135W adapter is sufficient to run the W520 without throttling. The 65W and 90W adapters can only be used to charge the battery while the W520 is not running, that is, powered off, hibernated, or suspended.

Unfortunately is impossible to use an external monitor (only tested with VGA) and the USB 3.0 on the back of the laptop is not working unless the Nvidia card is activated through debumblebee.
With "Integarted" selected is impossible to connect an external monitor (tested with VGA) and he USB 3.0 on the back of the laptop is not working.
With "Discrete" is possible to connect an external monitor (tested with VGA but xrandr outputs also the Display Port). With this option you still have to chose nouveau or nvidia drivers. Both work well but the 3D acceleration is much better with nvidia (the output of glxgears is 700 vs 12000 FPS).

The version of nvidia driver is 270.41.19.

It is also needed the 2.6.39.2 kernel version.

I set it to "Discrete".

The W520 comes with a special [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-76762.html 170W AC adapter (P/N 0A36227)] that is currently not shipped with any other Thinkpad. Note that it is different from the W700 [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70684 170W AC adapter (P/N 41R4421)]. The W520 AC adapter is larger but lighter than the W510 135W AC adapter.

Most newer (20V) Thinkpad AC adapters have a compatible plug with the W520, but not all of them will work due to power constraints. The following table shows which AC adapters can be used to run the W520:

The 135W adapter is sufficient to run the W520 without throttling. The 65W and 90W adapters can only be used to charge the battery while the W520 is not running, that is, powered off, hibernated, or suspended.
