Using the GATOS driver
At the GATOS webpage one can find the ati.2 driver, a drm-module for the kernel and some additional software. When combined this suffice to get the TV-Out of ATI Radeon (Mobility) chips activated. Yet the information and the software there seem to be a bit out of date.

Using atitvout
Another approach is by using the
atitvout tool
provided (but no longer maintained) by Lennart Poettering.

The provided archive contains a source release which can be compiled and installed by make and make install within the extracted directory. The atitvout tool will then be installed to /usr/local/sbin/atitvout.

The tool uses the VESA Bios Extensions (VBE) which are initialized only once during power on. So if you want to use the TV-out, be sure to get the corresponding video device such as a tv connected before powering your ThinkPad. Under some circumstances the tool fails to communicate properly with the VBE Bios. By issuing atitvout -f t you activate the SVideo output port. The command atitvout -f l you change the graphics output back to the LCD.

The atitvout doesn't seem to work on higher resolutions. To send a Xserver to a connected video device, it is possible to start a second Xserver e.g. with startx -- :1 -xf86config XF86Config-4_reduced-resolution. For resolutions up to 1024x768 the switching should work fine.

While this works very well for ordinary X applications, playing video files, say with mplayer or xine might result in wrong aspect ratio or otherwise distorted output.

Switch to a text console (preferably a non framebufferd one) and issue an atitvout -f t. Then start mplayer -vo svga and the filename and other options needed. After enjoying the show, switch back with atitvout -f l.
----

Yesterday I managed to get my TV-Out running, but it wasn't by the ati.2 theatre_drv driver for the Xserver. Instead I used a small and unmaintained tool named atitvout. I think it should work on other Radeon / Rage cards.

I have yet to test the theatre_drv variant, till now it didn't work as I expected. But I tried it with a second Xserver and perhaps that was the problem. I will try once more tomorrow running only one Xserver. By the documentation it should work, but my XFree.1.log said that the TVOutput Option was not used.

Now I'm not sure how to proceed with the documentation. If I succeed with the Xserver module, I would continue as I begun, but if it doesn't work, I only have the atitvout variant. Any hints on how to proceed?
--Macfiron 22:28, 15 Aug 2005 (CEST)
----
I just changed the sectioning of the page a bit, so we have two main sections now: the GATOS approach and the atitvout approach. This should help you going on. If you cannot validate the GATOS approach please remove the A30p entry from the "tested on" section.
----

Thanks for the advice. I already added the atitvout doku. And I managed to get up and run another test on the tv but I didn't get the ati.2 drivers to activate the SVideo out. And I got confused about the versions and dates of the GATOS drivers, XFree86 drivers and the drm-kernel module. Time for a break H-)

This is a documentation of some of the installation and configuration steps required for installing Debian/Sarge on a Thinkpad A30p and getting the most out of it.

Basic installation
The recommended procedure is, to get a Debian/Sarge DVD put it in the DVD-drive and boot from the DVD. Proceed with the installation as on an arbitrary computer.

Components
ACPI
For a detailed description of how to operate ACPI on IBM Thinkpads, take a look at How to make ACPI work. Further it explains the steps necessary to get suspend to ram and hibernation to work. Be sure to check How to get special keys to work if some of the function keys don't work properly.

Xserver and TV-out
The A30p is supplied with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7000 graphics adapter. It comes with a tv output and a tv input connector. The XFree86 supplied by Debian/Sarge contains a working ati driver which supports acceleration and DRI. However at GATOS you can find up to date OpenSource drivers for both, XFree86 and Xorg (while the 7.0 release should come along with the GATOS drivers).

For information on the SVideo out read How to get TV-Out working on ATI graphic cards.

Kernel
This is a short summary on the kernel features needed on the A30p.
The supplied kernel in Debian/Sarge is 2.6.8. It is advisable to get a newer Version. You can use either a newer debianized kernel or get a vanilla kernel. At the time this documentation is written, the latest known version is 2.6.12.4.

Enable support for: (recommended: as Module or Statically compiled in )

* Modules and module unloading
* Support for Pentium-III processor
* ACPI (how to make it work) S
* cpu-freq with ondemand governor (alternatively userspace governor) S
* PIIX chipset
* IDE/ATA drives and floppy (at least HDD S or initrd needed)
* PCMCIA - Yenta cardbus
* e100 network device M
* usb-uhci for usb host controller M
* i810 sound card M
* nvram M
* i2c M
* AGP and radeon support M

If using a debianized kernel, most features are compiled as modules. To get everything to work at boot you should put the according modules not detected by hotplug in /etc/modules:

ide-cd
ide-disk
ide-generic
nvram
cpufreq_ondemand

(not yet completed)

Xorg
For Xorg the ati.2 drivers are already contained within the latest releases. Just copy them to the given directories.

XServer configuration file
The documentation for the driver explains, that you have to add a line to the device section of your graphics adapter:

Option "TVOutput" "YYY"

where <tt>YYY</tt> is replaced by the desired video norm. Options are:
* NTSC
* NTSC-J
* PAL
* PAL-CN

Using the GATOS driver
Getting the driver
XFree86
Get the latest version of the GATOS ati.2 driver for your version of XFree86.
The ati.2 driver is a replacement for the one provided with the respective XFree86 distribution.

* NTSC
* NTSC-J
* PAL
* PAL-CN
* PAL-M
* PAL-N
* PAL-60

ThinkPads this has been successfully tested on
Using atitvout

Macfiron: /etc/modules

This is a documentation of some of the installation and configuration steps required for installing Debian/Sarge on a Thinkpad A30p and getting the most out of it.

Basic installation
The recommended procedure is, to get a Debian/Sarge DVD put it in the DVD-drive and boot from the DVD. Proceed with the installation as on an arbitrary computer.

Components
ACPI
For a detailed description of how to operate ACPI on IBM Thinkpads, take a look at How to make ACPI work. Further it explains the steps necessary to get suspend to ram and hibernation to work. (The combination FnF12 which should put your Thinkpad into hibernation doesn't generate the proper acpi event.)

* Modules and module unloading
* Support for Pentium-III processor
* ACPI (how to make it work) S
* cpu-freq with ondemand governor (alternatively userspace governor) S
* PIIX chipset
* IDE/ATA drives and floppy (at least HDD S or initrd needed)
* PCMCIA - Yenta cardbus
* e100 network device M
* usb-uhci for usb host controller M
* i810 sound card M
* nvram M
* i2c M
* AGP and radeon support M

If using a debianized kernel, most features are compiled as modules. To get everything to work at boot you should put the according modules not detected by hotplug in /etc/modules:

ide-cd
ide-disk
ide-generic
psmouse
acpi
ac
battery
nvram
cpufreq_ondemand

(not yet completed)

Software
* acpid
* acpi-support Version 0.21 (not contained in Debian, lent from Ubuntu)
* laptop-mode-tools
* atitvout tool for radeon video adapters
* ati.2 driver up to date driver for ATI radeon cards

Basic installation
The recommended procedure is, to get a Debian/Sarge DVD put it in the DVD-drive and boot from the DVD. Proceed with the installation as on an arbitrary computer.

While i agree to your argument, i kept it on a separate page because putting it on all the relevant adapters pages would cause redundant editing needs when something changes.
