ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Stations with USB 3.0
As of June 2012, variants of the docking stations with USB 3.0 support have been released. They are identical to the original docks, except each has a single USB 3.0 port, distinguished by a blue color. The USB 3.0 docks can be identified by the 433x-x5x part number (as opposed to the 433x-x0x of the original models).

The following docks are available with USB 3.0:

* ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433615W)
** One of the four USB 2.0 ports replaced with USB 3.0

* ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433715U - U.S.)
** One of the six USB 2.0 ports replaced with USB 3.0

* ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 90W (433815U - U.S.)
** eSATA port replaced with USB 3.0
* ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 170W (433835U - U.S.)
** eSATA port replaced with USB 3.0

It is unknown why Lenovo chose to sacrifice the eSATA port on the Mini Dock Plus instead of one of the USB 2.0 ports as on the other docks. This means, unfortunately, that there is no docking station in this series supporting both eSATA and USB 3.0.

Supported Thinkpads and USB 3.0 compatibility
Each of these docking stations supports the same Thinkpads which are supported by the respective original models. However, the USB 3.0 functionality is available only on the Ivy Bridge Thinkpads, and an the Core i7 variant of the X220, which includes a third-party USB 3.0 controller where special provisions have been made to support the USB 3.0 docks. With all other models, the USB 3.0 port will only function as USB 2.0.

* ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433715U - U.S.)
** One of the six USB 2.0 ports replaced with USB 3.0

* ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 90W (433815U - U.S.)
** eSATA port replaced with USB 3.0
* ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 170W (433835U - U.S.)

Lastly, if you were brave enough to install an IPS SXGA+ screen on a regular X61, 'middleton' has a BIOS mod that enables it.

SATA II Mod: While the X61/T61/R61/X300 possess a SATA II-interface (up to 3.0 GBit/s) they were limited to SATA I (up to 1.5 GBit/s) in the BIOS to maintain compatibility with older drives. Normal hard drives will rarely max out SATA I speeds, but nowadays, SSDs can handle the full 3.0 GBit/s (and more).
If you use a 64-bit version or another operating system you have to burn the included ISO-file on a CD or DVD and boot from it. These modified bios have been beta tested to confirm they do not brick the system after flash. However data integrity tests take time and it's up to the user to confirm there is no data loss due to the increased SATA-II interface speed. You will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from flashing or using of the patched BIOS.
last update: 05-04-2018

SLIC 2.1
Stands for "Software licensing information code" which is a technique used by OEM-computerseller to execute Windows-installations without having to activate it (which is required from Windows XP onwards). SLIC 2.1 is required to use that feature with Windows 7. I don't really need that feature since Windows' product activation doesn't hurt, but especially Windows 7-users without internet-connection (or valid license-key) may appreciate it.

whitelist removed
If you try to use the MiniPCI Express-slot with Non-Lenovo cards you'll get Error 1802 after starting. This fix removes the whitelist so you can use cards of any manufacturer.

Thermal sensing
On a few models with Intel Core 2 Duo "Penryn" CPU the user gets a "Thermal Sensing error" upon starting the system which has to be canceled by pressing Escape. This fix removes the error-message.

CTRL-FN-Swap
You can find the CTRL-key on most notebooks in the bottom left corner of the keyboard. The special function-key (Fn) is on its right side. On Lenovo-notebooks this is interchanged. A lot of user with multiple notebooks don't like this so you can revert the order with this fix. You can choose this by using the other BIOS-update-files (which you find in the ZIP-package). I did it and after getting used to it for a while it is now more pleasant to have the same behaviour on all keyboards.

Acknowledgments
* nando4 for providing all needed information on SATA-II mod. I knew nothing about this issue in 2010 and didn't plan to make any ThinkPad BIOS mods (except for CTRL-FN swap). It was him who convinced me to solve SATA-II problem. Also he literally forced me to add dual-IDA support (he knows what I'm talking about :)). <br> andyp for his BIOS modding tools and other guys from forums.mydigitallife.info for making SLIC 2.1 integration possible.
* Zender for finding the way of disabling wireless whitelist on ThinkPads. This significantly accelerated the work on the patch (otherwise I would have had to do it myself and it would have taken additional time).
* Leokim for X61/X61s SXGA+ BIOS.
* XStoneX for informing me about "Thermal Sensing Error". <br> unclewebb for the ThrottleStop utility which makes dual-IDA possible and kizwan for the "EIST Unlocked Example" guide.
last update: 10-12-2012, archived by Ali.dj

* Leokim for X61/X61s SXGA+ BIOS.
* XStoneX for informing me about "Thermal Sensing Error". <br> unclewebb for the ThrottleStop utility which makes dual-IDA possible and kizwan for the "EIST Unlocked Example" guide.
* Brave ThinkPad owners for readiness to test intermediate BIOS versions.

BugFix
It is a known problem for the X220 Tablet (other models may apply), that there is a problem concerning the CPU throttling in LINUX.
* Syntoms vary for different kernels and distributions. Eg in ubuntu the CPU speed gets blocked at low rates and the computer becomes very slow until reboot, in Opensuse the entire desktop freezes (only mouse pointer working) and switching to console is not possible.
* Solution is to disable the power management in the BIOS (at least disable BIOS CPU speed throttling). This has no major affect on battery life since the OS is still able to throttle the CPU when neccessary.
Notes
* The CPU speed will be throttled back to 800MHz if the machine is run on the 65W AC adapter with no battery installed. To avoid this throttling
** run on a 90W AC adapter, or
** install a battery pack.
* It's possible to use a mSATA SSD within the second MiniPCI Express slot.
* On booting:
**The X220 cannot/will not boot GPT disks using Legacy BIOS, you must setup UEFI.
**The X220 will not boot /efi/*/*.efi unless "signed"(?) into BIOS, you have to copy it to /efi/boot/bootx64.efi.
**Disabling the BIOS setting "USB UEFI BIOS Support" disables *all* USB booting, ie, both UEFI and legacy BIOS.
* Maximum DDR3 speed depends on the BIOS version. BIOS versions up to 1.28 allow RAM speeds up to 1866MHz. BIOS versions 1.29 and above limit RAM to 1333MHz. Modified versions of BIOS available that remove this limitation.
* The combined headphone/microphone jack is a 4-pin TRRS connector and is wired as per CTIA/AHJ standard (tip - left, ring1 - right, ring2 - ground, sleeve - mic). Which means, it is compatible with most modern cellphone headsets (including Apple); however, it is not compatible with older Nokia and Samsung headsets wired as OMTP.
