As of 2014-02-24 the following problems exist with the W540 under opensuse 13.1 64bit Linux:

What is not working:
* monitors connected to the Ultra Doc.
* Audio port on Ultradoc (works on side of laptop)

Details:
When running opensuse 13.1 x64, there are two Bumblebee repos, Do not mix them. The [http://smithfarm-thebrain.blogspot.com/2013/10/opensuse-131-nvidia-optimus-bumblebee.html smithfarm/overman79 instructions] work. Make sure you have the kernel dev pattern installed, as well as the kernel source.

There is another repo that looks more official and has a mixed set of packages, some newer and older than the overman79 repo. I don't know how to use the [http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Bumblebee/ X11:Bumblebee] repository yet.

It is able to drive two external monitors and the internal display using the two side ports. The thunderbolt connector works correctly, including audio though the thunderbolt port via an HDMI adapter to a TV.

There are more problems to work around on other machines; probably, the BIOS version is making the difference. When installing opensuse 13.1 (64 bit) on a machine with BIOS version 2.09, "OS Optimized Defaults" disabled in the BIOS setup, the following problems might occur:
* Activating the NVIDIA GPU causes memory corruption leading to crashes and file system corruption. This might be related to [https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/78 this issue]. A workaround is using only intel graphics using the kernel options<br />{{bootparm|i915.modeset|1}} {{bootparm|nouveau.modeset|0}}<br /> and probably {{bootparm|rdblacklist|nouveau}} and blacklisting the nouveau module in {{path|/etc/modprobe.d}}.
* Under unknown circumstances, the USB subsystem dies completely. This might be related to the integrated camera and power saving (using the "tunables" in powertop might also have provoked this behaviour). This does not seem to happen when using the kernel options<br />{{bootparm|acpi_osi|'!Windows 2012'}} {{bootparm|apm|off}} {{bootparm|powersaved|off}} {{bootparm|nohz|off}} {{bootparm|usbcore.autosuspend|-1}}<br />Probably, {{bootparm|nohz|off}} is sufficient.
* The current kernel does not support the card reader. There's no known workaround besides using an external reader.
* You might want to use the kernel option {{bootparm|acpi_osi|'!Windows 2012'}} for better working brightness keys.
* To get the TrackPoint button emulation working, edit your {{path|/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf}} according to the answer to [http://askubuntu.com/questions/370505/how-to-use-trackpoint-but-keep-touchpad-disabled-on-lenovo-thinkpad-e531 this question].
* There seems to exist a [http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.usb.general/100377 udisk bug] causing the desktop not to recognize some external USB drives. Affected drives must be mounted manually until the [https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73780 fix] is applied by opensuse.

When experimenting with this, you should be familiar with the [https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sysrq.txt Magic SysRq key] to minimize file system corruption. This is a bit harder on a W540, because

The W520 comes with a special [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-76762.html 170W AC adapter (P/N 0A36227)] that is currently not shipped with any other Thinkpad. Note that it is different from the W700 [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70684 170W AC adapter (P/N 41R4421)]. The W520 AC adapter is larger but lighter than the W510 135W AC adapter.

Most newer (20V) Thinkpad AC adapters have a compatible plug with the W520, but not all of them will work due to power constraints. The following table shows which AC adapters can be used to run the W520:

Add "options iwlcore led_mode=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlcore.conf to set the LED on steady, or you can set led_mode=0 to have it flash whenever there is wireless activity (default)

* XEN and W510 - After trying numerous combinations of Linux distributions & XEN to get the W510 running a dom0 the problem was well-integrated XEN environments with no support for the W510 or new distributions (like Ubuntu) fixing driver problems but no XEN support whatsoever. I eventually found OpenSuse 11.3 milestone 7 worked pretty well with full resolution graphic support using Nouveau (2.6.34-8) in a dom0. Note: you have to enable VT-d support in BIOS if you want HVM support. * KVM and W510 - Using Ubuntu 10.04 KVM tools this works very well and is very stable with less disk-thrashing than seen with the OpenSuse11.3 and XEN. Performance seems to be en-par with that of XEN when running the same guest (desktop) VMs. Ubuntu 10.04 (latest updates) seems to support W510 hardware quite well with nouveau graphics driver. * Ubuntu 10.04 LTS works well and does not lockup on W510/W520. Laptop can work for hours trouble-free... but usually locks up within first 5mins.

* On Ubuntu Karmic, Wireless can be enabled by installing linux-backport-modules-karmic. This adds missing firmware for 6000-series cards. This does not seem to work with the 2.6.31-20 kernel but I have no problems in the 2.6.31-19.
* All Versions: System cannot suspend unless <nowiki>SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci"</nowiki> (on ArchLinux with 2.6.35 the Module is called "xhci_hcd") is added to /etc/pm/config.d/unload_modules (may need to create this file) Note that this does not resolve the "crash on second resume" problem.
* On archlinux, ethernet will work after one manually installs the newest kernel26 package, while wifi requires the appropriate microcode package, iwlwifi-6000-ucode.
* The Nouveau open source nVidia driver [http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2194707&postcount=20] works at full resolution without freezing (but without 3D acceleration). * The W510 ships with a large (nearly doubled size of the 90W version) 135W power supply. However, it is possible to plug 90W power supplies, but they get rather warm. Upon boot there's a notification message, that a power supply with reduced performance is connected. '''Note''': In order to avoid overloading the weaker power supply, the CPU is throttled drastically and usually does not go above 400 Mhz.
* If the binary nVidia drivers are not installed the system runs about 10 degrees warmer and uses a few watts more power. It seems the open source 'nouveau' driver does not have power saving functionality with the nVidia chipset. The program "nvclock" might be able to alleviate this, but I haven't tried.
* A high pitched noise can sometimes be heard when the computer is running. I was informed that this is the CPU's power management unit. If it annoys you it can be disabled in the BIOS. Also seems that it is correlated with brightness level - at maximum level noise disappears even if laptop works at bare WM without large tasks.
* The computer does not boot at all when some USB keyboards are plugged in at power on. This is a problem with the BIOS and not with Linux or Windows. The only solution is to unplug the keyboard and plug it in again once the laptop is past the BIOS screen and booting as normal.
* After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 the system hangs very often. Nothing unusual in dmesg or system logs. Seems to happen more often when using wireless. (see bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576352)
** this is mostly alleviated by updating to Nvidia driver version 256 (now higher) from the SWAT reposistory for Ubuntu. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates. Also throttle the clock speed of the GPU to the minimum (reducing heat) following guidelines from here: http://linux.aldeby.org/nvidia-powermizer-powersaving.html to pretty much end the hangs. Issue has been seen to exist on Windows and Ubuntu. Current Nvidia drivers (v.256+) appear to reduce (but not solve) the problem on both platforms.
** No problems with NVIDIA driver on W510/520: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09. Any other version tried (10.04.3 default one included) just hangs. It is important to disable the graphics-chipset selection by operating system in the BIOS. Otherwise, on a dual-boot system Windows will keep changing it and confusing Ubuntu/NVIDIA.

Note this is a full height/half size and not a 'low profile' slot (the PCI card on the pictures below is "low-profile", but "half-size" cards also fit in the Dock II). Separate brackets are required for low profile PCI cards. Normal cards will not fit.

Many use the half-size PCI slot for peripherals like secondary video cards, TV tuners, audio cards, etc. This is considered by many to be the highlight of the Dock II, and is a feature that few other docks have. The Dock II does not support AGP or PCI Express. The Ultrabay 2000 slot can be used to connect other IBM peripherals, such as second hard disks or CD/DVD drives.

In order to use a larger than "low-profile" card with the Dock II you can use a PCI riser. This means you might have to build a hollow support base for the dock, but it will allow you to connect any card. These PCI risers can be found at places such as [http://mini-itx.com/store/?c=8#p1908].

===Video Cards===
The PCI slot is most often used for installing video cards to allow for multiple monitors. This feature is especially useful for anyone that requires visualizing a large amount of information, including stock brokers, artists, etc. Due to the slow PCI bus, gaming is generally not improved much by external cards. In fact it is more than likely that using an external card will harm gaming performance due to the number of PCI devices sharing the bus in a typical Thinkpad, the immutable latency_timer of the Dock II's PCI slot and the proprietary bridge connecting the Thinkpad to the Dock II. Bandwidth on an a22m with no other peripherals seems not to exceed 35 MB/s.
One of the chief concerns of low profile video cards is whether they support the monitor setup you desire. As more monitors these days are LCDs, quality DVI support is essential. Additional concerns include driver support, ability to hot-swap (add or remove the thinkpad without rebooting), and noise/heat.
A PCI video card CANNOT drive the ThinkPad internal LCD, there is no such signal path.
====Quality DVI & Widescreen support====
One way to work around the [[Problem with DVI throughput|limitations]] of the docks DVI pass-through port is to use a PCI graphics card which features a DVI port. Note that while this probably will work, the performance of the PCI graphics accellerator will be poor because of the limitations of the interface.

Also the newest ATI video drivers for both Linux and Windows are known to not have limited resolution support on the external DVI port anymore.

Since the [[Dock II]] has been reported to be a bit noisy, some people have taken to unplugging the fan inside (or possibly replacing it). While this likely voids your warranty, it may be necessary if you really want it quiet. Adding a video card increases the heat inside the dock, and may likely have a fan on board as well, meaning it will increase the noise level. While adding one of the below video cards is likely well within the thermal limitations of the dock, you should take into consideration the noise and heat it may add.

The fan is located inside the power supply and is 40x40x13mm / 5V. To reduce noise the fan for example can be replaced by any 12V-fan, that starts when operating at 5V (many don't). ==Ultrabay 2000==
In contrast to the [[ThinkPad Dock|Full Dock I]] the Full Dock II has a full featured (= hotswap capable) [[UltraBay|UltraBay 2000]] slot.

Note to T4x owners: [[UltraBay|UltraBay 2000]] is an older Ultrabay technology, not compatible with the [[UltraBay|UltraBay Slim]] in the T40/T41/T42/T43 lineup. Many [[UltraBay|UltraBay 2000]] accessories are available on [http://search.ebay.com/ultrabay-2000 Ebay].

The docks IDE interface is a CMD 648, so you should enable the according kernel option (compile it into the kernel if loading as a module doesn't work), if you want to use anything else than a floppy in the docks UltraBay.
Note that the interface will most likely be ide2 and ide3 then, so the docks UltraBay drive will be hde.

==PC Card Slots==
Nothing special: 2 additional Type II slots. This may be helpful if you need a certain PC Card only while docked (e.g. a second GBit NIC), or if you have 2 PC Cards that physically won't fit into one pair of slots at the same time (e.g. 2 WLAN cards or 2 [http://www.villagetronic.com/e_pr_vtbook.html Villagetronic VTBook Video cards] ).



==DVI pass-through==
LCD monitors are getting larger and higher-resolution. Currently, DVI based on 165MHz TDMS transmitters can only (officially) support 1600x1200x32 at 60Hz, which is the resolution of your average 20" non-widescreen LCD. IBM's driver support for this resolution through DVI ports on docks has been inconsistent. Also in Linux you might experience [[Problem with DVI throughput|problems]] even with this resolution and IBM officially states that the pass-through DVI port only supports resolutions up to 1280x1024. Read [[Problem with DVI throughput|our page]] of information on how to solve these troubles.

Please be aware that not all Thinkpad models will support DVI output with a Dock. Apparently, X and T2* models do not. Please add other models if you know about them to not support DVI.

Problem with unauthorized MiniPCI network card

==Problem Description==
Although the MiniPCI slot is an industry standard and can accept any MiniPCI adapter, the IBM BIOS is set to only allow you to boot with an 'authorized' adapter installed. Attempts to install an unsupported card will result in the following message:

1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

This is because the card's sub-vendor PCI-ID (which can be seen using ''lspci -v'') are checked against a [[Wikipedia:Whitelist|whitelist]] in the BIOS. IBM's reasoning for this is that the combination of MiniPCI card and the integrated antenna in the ThinkPad needs to be certified by the US FCC (Federal Communications Commission).{{footnote|1}} or similar agencies in other countries.

==Problem Description==
Although the MiniPCI slot is an industry standard and can accept any MiniPCI adapter, the IBM BIOS is set to only allow you to boot with an 'authorized' adapter installed. Attempts to install an unsupported card will result in the following message:

1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

This is because the card's sub-vendor PCI-ID (which can be seen using ''lspci -v'') are checked against a [[Wikipedia:Whitelist|whitelist]] in the BIOS. IBM's reasoning for this is that the combination of MiniPCI card and the integrated antenna in the ThinkPad needs to be certified by the US FCC (Federal Communications Commission).{{footnote|1}} or similar agencies in other countries.

It may be possible to use the computer with the unauthorized card deactivated (but not removed). This does not make the wireless card work, but it may allow you to boot the computer normally.
