==Intro==
I started to write up this page as of 2009-08-12. It is work in progress. The "template" was taken from [[Install_Ubuntu_9.04_(Jaunty_Jackalope)_on_a_ThinkPad_T400| Ubuntu 9.04 on a T400]]. The good news is: Nearly everything works out of the box on [[ http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/910features | Karmic ]], 10.04, and 10.10. Where are the good old times it took you a couple of nights to get a new box up and running? ;)

==Before Installation==

Backup your data. Maybe dd the rescue partition.

==BIOS Upgrade==
There is a [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-72823.html Bios upgrade] available. Not sure if it is required. Install from a CD went smoothly.

==What works out of the box?==

*Wireless with iwlagn driver ([[Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 WLAN controller]])
**G mode + WEP and WPA2 PSK
**With status LED and everything! (LED does not work for ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III)
**version: 1.3.27k
**Firmware: iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode

*Bluetooth
** Bus 004 Device 005: ID 0a5c:2145 Broadcom Corp.
** With status LED and everything!
** Tested with Motorola headset HT820. After connecting with Blueman the audio device shows up in pulseaudio
** Tested with Nokia 810 and BlueMaemo (Mouse, Keyboard)

* Microphone mute button (You get a key event though)
* bluetoothd sometimes dies while suspend/hibernate
** Fix: restart bluetoothd
* 3G modem is not available after suspend/hibernate
** unload and load cdc_wdm
** echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/rfkill/rfkill1/state
I promise to pimp my helper scripts that do all that automatically and release them soon (TM).

* Multitouch (Touchpad, don't know about screen) seems not to be working
** Tried http://ubuntu-snippets.blogspot.com/2009/03/multi-touch-for-anyall-synaptics.html
** "synclient -m 100" reports no more than 1 finger

* the internal speakers do not mute if the thinkpad is connected to [[ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3]]
* In between Linux kernel 2.6.34 and 2.6.35 commit id 7b2bfdb has broken the internal mic and the head phones jack. Up to Ubuntu 10.04 that is not a problem. Later load snd-hda-intel model="thinkpad". You can create a file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-intel.conf with the line <code>options snd-hda-intel model="thinkpad"</code> in it.

You may ask why an alpha when you can have Ubuntu Jaunty. I use btrfs as my filesystem of choice.

The ThinkPad Button is a button situated in the upper left corner of the keyboard on modern ThinkPads. It is intended to be a means of quick access to help and support. Technically it is nothing else than a button that can be configured to launch a certain piece of software. While originally it was grey and labelled {{ibmkey|ThinkPad|#494949}}, IBM later made it blue and called it the {{ibmkey|Access IBM|#495988}} Button. Lenovo relabelled it as {{ibmkey|ThinkVantage|#495988}} after it took over the ThinkPad line from IBM.

== System Boot ==
Pressing {{ibmkey|Access IBM|#495988}} or {{ibmkey|ThinkVantage|#495988}} at system boot can launch the [[Predesktop Area| Predesktop Area]]. This depends on a specific setting of the BIOS Setup Utility and on the availability of either a [[Hidden Protected Area|Hidden Protected Area]] or a [[Rescue and Recovery|Rescue and Recovery partition]]. == Linux support ==
===Using HAL===
Recent Linux distributions like Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 8.10 use HAL to manage input devices.

HAL will map the ThinkPad button to either 'vendor' or 'prog1', depending on the version of the hal-info config files.

Older versions mapped it to 'vendor' because that is the most logical choice. However the 'vendor' button keycode is out of range for Xorg, which made it impossible to have Xorg respond to the keypress (this limitation should be fixed with Xorg 1.6 planned for late 2009). As such the mapping was changed to 'prog1' instead in later versions of the config files.

The config file responsible for this is {{path|/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-module-thinkpad-acpi.fdi}} and you can view the mapping with lshal.

If you wish to do your own mapping, you can override the system mapping files by creating your own in {{path|/etc/hal/fdi}}.

You can also run xev from Xorg to check if Xorg recognises the button when pressed. If Xorg recognises the button it can be configured in gnome with gnome-keybinding-properties.
===Using tpb===
Under Linux, the IBM ThinkPad(tm) special keys can be enabled using [[tpb]].

I.e., to make pressing the Access IBM Button launch ntpctl, add the following line {{path|/etc/tpbrc}} file:

===Using xbindkeys on Ubuntu===

On Ubuntu (at least 7.04/Feisty) <code>tpb</code> is not really an option, because it conflicts with <code>hotkey-setup</code>, which is responsible for much things working out of the box.

An alternative is to use <code>xbindkeys</code>, which can easily be installed with <code>aptitude install xbindkeys</code> or via the Synaptic package manager. It can be used to assign arbitrary commands to certain keycodes. Therefore, we first have to find this keycode by running <code>xbindkeys --key</code> and pressing the ThinkPad Button. This should result in something like the following:

A simpler but less flexible possibility than <code>xbindkeys</code> is "System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts". Just go to (for example) "Run a terminal" and press the ThinkPad Button, when asked for a "New accelerator...". This will only work under the Gnome Desktop and cannot execute arbitrary commands, as <code>xbindkeys</code> and <code>tpb</code> can.

I just started to write up this page as of 2009-08-12. Please expect more to come in the next couple of days. The "template" was taken from [[Install_Ubuntu_9.04_(Jaunty_Jackalope)_on_a_ThinkPad_T400| Ubuntu 9.04 on a T400]]. Of course at the moment [[http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha3 | Karmic Alpha3]] is all you can get off the Net. The good news is: Everything works out of the box.

Backup your data. Maybe dd the rescue partition.

==What works out of the box?==

*Wireless with iwlagn driver ([[Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 WLAN controller]])
**G mode + WEP and WPA2 PSK
**With status LED and everything!
**version: 1.3.27k
**Firmware: iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode
*Bluetooth
** Bus 004 Device 005: ID 0a5c:2145 Broadcom Corp.
** With status LED and everything!
** Tested with Motorola headset HT820. After connecting with Blueman you need to register the headset using
pactl load-module module-alsa-sink device=bluetooth
** Tested with Nokia 810 and BlueMaemo (Mouse, Keyboard)

** pressure range 0 - 255
** no idea how to use gestures

**Thinklight control (FN + PgUp)
**WLAN/BT/OFF toggle (Fn+F5 press once: Wlan and BT off/Press second time: BT off, Wlan on/Third time: BT on, Wlan off/Press another time: BT and Wlan on)
**To add a bluetooth-only-toggle (Fn+F6) that doesn't affect WLAN take a look [[ThinkPad_Bluetooth_with_Enhanced_Data_Rate_(BDC-2)|here]]
**Wlan/BT hardware switch
**Media player control (FN + arrows)
**Browser history buttons
**Switch to extern Monitor (FN + F7 press once: picture on both monitors/Second time: on external Monitor/Third time: Laptop monitor)
