==Problem Description==

When replacing the system disk with one that is not a ThinkPad option designed for the specific model, the BIOS will display an "Error 2010" warning during every boot. The system may still boot successfully, but may be unreliable or slow.

Additionally, the following ATA commands are implemented by ThinkPad-branded drives but are not supported by most other laptop drives:
* <tt>UNLOAD IMMEDIATE</tt> (needed for the [[Active Protection System]]; see [[Problem with APS harddisk parking]])
* <tt>SECURITY FEATURE SET</tt> (needed for disk password protection)

==Affected Models==
The "Error 2010" issue exists only on the following models:
* ThinkPad {{T43}}, {{T43p}}
* ThinkPad {{R52}}
* ThinkPad {{X41}}, {{X41T}}

Missing ATA commands affect all ThinkPad models which normally offer these features.

==Affected Operating Systems==

The reliability and performance issues depend on the operating system. They have been reported for Windows. It is not clear to what degree Linux is susceptible.

==Status==

The error is displayed when the system drive is not one of the few approved disks listed inside the BIOS, and may indicate a real problem. These systems have a SATA disk controller, and employ a SATA-to-PATA bridge in order to use PATA (IDE) drives. It is rumored that this bridge requires changes in the drive firmware, and the BIOS checks for this adapted firmware.

Recent BIOSs provide the option to disable the need to press Esc after the message (for ThinkPad {{T43}} models 26xx, BIOS version [http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=ibm&lndocid=MIGR-58597#bios 1.24 or higher]).

There are no such issues for disks used in the UltraBay Slim 2nd Hard Drive Adapter.

A recent BIOS for your machine may provide the option to disable need to press Esc after the message (under <tt>Startup -> Boot after message for Hard drive...</tt>). However, the delay and beeps are still enforced. Note that the error message could indicate a real problem, which will not be resolved by disabling the message.

Most drives do not have such upgrades, and some manufacturers have refused to adapt their firmware to the limitations of ThinkPad systems.

It has been [http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=101863#101863 reported] that for Hitachi drives, firmware update is possible only with drives manufactured for IBM. Other Hitachi drives may use PROM instead of EPROM for the firmware and thus cannot be updated.

===Use an Ultrabay adapter===

You can use most PATA drives through an [[UltraBay Slim HDD Adapter]] (or the equivalent for your system or docking station). This can be a convenient configuration to use the second HD as a data drive. Another useful configuration is having the second drive bootable to a different OS, since it insulates you from many, though not necessarily all dual boot problems related to multiple OSs on the same physical volume. Most modern BIOS provides a boot manager function ahead of any OS load, so the "alternate" OS need not even know that another OS is present. In the case of the T43, installing the second OS onto a drive in the 2nd HDD Adapter is problematic since that bay is where the CDROM/DVDROM normally sits, so some extraordinary procedure is needed. This might be from a bootable USB-connected CDROM/DVDROM or a network source if your OS supports it; it may also be possible to mount the CDROM/DVDROM in a dock and do the install from there. Be careful of OS installations or disk management functions that attempt to write identification information to the disk that isn't theirs.

===BIOS downgrade===

Now we are ready to add users to thinkfinger. As make install did not create /etc/pam_thinkfinger, we need to create it now:

== Testing the driver ==
Now the driver is installed and should be working. You can try it with

This will ask you to swipe your finger three times, save the fingerprint to /tmp/test.bir and then verify your fingerprint with the bir-file.

== Configuring PAM to use ThinkFinger ==
Now you can configure pam to use ThinkFinger:

Open /etc/pam.d/common-auth:

Add this line before any pam_unix or pam_unix2 directives:
auth sufficient pam_thinkfinger.so

If your PAM uses the pam_unix and not the pam_unix2 module, you need to pass a specific argument in
the /etc/pam.d/common-auth directive to make it consider the password entered at the pam_thinkfinger prompt.
auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass

For instance my /etc/pam.d/common-auth looks like this:
auth sufficient pam_thinkfinger.so
auth required pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass

Now we are ready to add users to thinkfinger. As make install did not create /etc/pam_thinkfinger, we need to create it now:

Now the user should be able to login with his finger, instead of the password.

The classic integrated pointing device in ThinkPads was always a trackpoint. With the T30 IBM introduced UltraNav, a combination of both the classical [[TrackPoint]] coupled with a programmable touchpad. The technology for this combined pointing device comes from Synaptics. The TouchPad features all kind of customizable ways of input, from standard pointing over scrolling by movement along the edges, tap zones, to ignoring accidential touches.

==Linux Support==
Both the TrackPoint and the TouchPad work with the standard ps2/psaux driver of linux kernels.

To get advanced configurability for the touchpad working there are several drivers for Synaptics TouchPads available for X:

==Windows Support==
The UltraNav driver from IBM is based on the Synaptics driver. It contains a bug leading to "defective pixels":
If the scroll-function of the touchpad is used (moving finger on right border of touchpad), often taskmanger shows
an application/window on its first tab named "Syn Visual Window". Sometimes this stays on the screen and in task
manager. It is a 1x1 pixel large window that is usually white. If you move the mouse directly over this pixel,
a little icon appears like if the middle trackpoint button is used to scroll.
This pixel can be removed by terminating SynTP* processes in taskmanager. Some claim that it can be removed by
using the middle trackpoint button, althought this is not always the case.
So far this problem has been reproduced on T60P and T41P, but only by scrolling large wegpages in Firefox.
After Firefox was closed, the pixel is still there.
IBM was able to reproduce this by installing Firefox on a fresh recovery image in their labs. But they
refuse to fix this or pass it to Synaptics or their driver developers, because Firefox "is not supported".
Guess IBM only wants you to use IE.
This bug is quite annoying because people think it's a wandering defective pixel

Recently, A T42 with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 7 was also able to reproduce this issue.

When playing a region-coded video DVD for the first time using a Linux player, you may get errors such as the following:
libdvdread: Invalid IFO for VMGM (VIDEO_TS.IFO)
This is caused by the DVD driver's region never having been set. Use <tt>regionset</tt> to set some region and retry. It is important that you choose the correct region code, as you will NOT be able to read any other regions, and you can only change the region 4 times before it becomes permanant.

With older drives you could use libdvdread to bypass a drives region restrictions, but this no longer works with most modern drives, particularly those from Matshita.

Switching the SATA controller from "compatibility" to "AHCI" in the BIOS settings (and thus using the ahci instead of the ata_piix driver) made suspend to ram work for me with the 2.6.15-23-686 kernel. However, it seems to draw about 1 - 2 W more power when in this mode.

I recently bought a second-hand ThinkPad T23, Model 2647-4MG, and decided to run Gentoo Linux 2.6.12-r6 on it; this is the 2005.1 release on a DVD, since I have limited internet access.

The default kernel booted OK, and recognised all the devices (tho' I haven't tested the modem, and I've run X-windows only briefly.) However, I wanted software suspend, and I couldn't get that to work at all.

The first complaint from dmesg was that ACPI wasn't enabled in the BIOS; the T23 BIOS has no mention of ACPI, so I added lapic to the kernel arguments and that went away. The next problem was a large number of ACPI error messages, generally of the form AE_NOT_EXIST, so I got the Intel iasl compiler source from their site and compiled it. It compiled cleanly, and de-compiling and re-compiling the DSDT gave one Error and one Remark. I fixed them as best I could, and loaded the new DSDT on boot with the kernel's "Custom DSDT" option; this worked correctly, but dmesg still showed a lot of ACPI error messages, including two which said "Found ECDT" and "Could not use ECDT".

Rather than messing with the ECDT straightaway, I decided to upgrade to the
latest BIOS and Embedded Controller BIOS. The system came with (the
original) versions 1.12 and 1.04, so I downloaded versions 1.18 and
1.06a from the IBM Website. The installers come in floppy disk and
Windows-based versions, and I used them under Windows 2000. Mercifully
the re-flash worked as advertised, tho' interestingly the {{key|F12}} "Select
Boot Device" menu changed slightly, and at first it appeared to have
lost the "Boot from USB" option, although that was enabled in the BIOS.
Apparently the menu now simply calls a USB memory stick a hard drive.
Anyway, boot from USB still works.

Booting into Linux then gave me no error messages, and dmesg showed that
the ACPI had found the ECDT and enabled the interpreter. There was also
a full set of ACPI entries under {{path|/proc}}. Although the DSDT had changed,
de-compiling and re-compiling with iasl showed that the error that had
originally bothered me was still there, so I let it be. I then loaded
acpid, which handles the ACPI buttons through scripts in /etc/acpi.
Trying {{key|Fn}}{{key|F4}} to {{cmdroot|echo -n 3 >/proc/acpi/sleep}} suspended the system, but
nothing would bring it back. Fortunately the Power Off button was still
functional.

NOTE: On newer kernels ( > 2.6.13) /proc/acpi/sleep has been superceaded by /sys/power/state, where state
can be either mem or standby (other options are available depending on system in question).
so to syspend to ram you would type "echo mem > /sys/poewr/state", and for standby you woudl type
"echo standby > /sys/power/state".

Digging around, it looked as if there were only three keys which ACPI
handled by default - the Power Off key, the Suspend key ({{key|Fn}}{{key|F4}}) and the
Lid key. I found that I had to provide a handler for the Suspend key,
but for simplicity I left the other two alone, and most other special
purpose keys, eg. {{key|Fn}}{{key|Home}} (LED brighter), {{key|Fn}}{{key|End}} (LED dimmer), {{key|Fn}}{{key|PgUp}}
(Screen light), kept on working anyway. {{key|Fn}}{{key|F3}} (Screen blank), didn't
work and nor (fortunately) did {{key|Fn}}{{key|F12}}, Suspend to disk; {{key|Fn}}{{key|F7}}, Switch to
video, seemed to - at least, it blanked the LCD. I then tried unloading
suspicious drivers such as USB, but could still only enter Suspend mode
and not recover; finally I built a kernel with no loadable modules
except networking, and the minimum of options - no USB, no PCMCIA,
nothing that wasn't actually present when the machine booted. That
finally worked, and I could suspend to disk with {{key|Fn}}{{key|F4}} and recover by
pressing Fn (but no other key - I seem to recall that any keypress would
work with the original BIOS).

When the machine is running, the Lid switch blanks the screen when
pressed and restores on release, but if the machine is suspended
pressing the switch does nothing and releasing it brings the machine out
of suspend mode. That seems reasonable. Commands echoed to eg:
{{path|/proc/acpi/ibm/light}} can be mixed with the appropriate keypresses (here,
{{key|Fn}}{{key|PgUp}}) without problems.

I started re-enabling the various bits of hardware I needed one by one,
but when I re-enabled the Savage S3 framebuffer support the machine
would enter suspend, but would hang partway through re-emergence.

I then disabled the S3 stuff and enabled the Intel 830M framebuffer code
(I don't know how this relates to the S3 driver, but the T23 apparently
has both chips) and the suspend worked again. The S3 driver is handy in
text mode, since it gives more lines per screen (and a nice penguin logo
on boot-up) but the system still runs eg: X windows reasonably well.

Suspending and re-emerging with USB support and a USB memory key
plugged in, and with X windows running, then worked fine; at the
moment I don't have the hardware to test anything more. Some things
are still odd - the CPU (Pentium IIIM) has power management but not
throttling, and doesn't at the moment change speed automatically.
There must be a way around this, but since the CPU has only two speeds
it's easier to use a shell script to flip between the performance and
powersave kernel governors; everything needed can be found in the {{path|/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq}} directory.

The Bay LED wrongly stays lit even when in suspend mode on battery
(unlike the Power LED), but the most recent (1.1) ibm_acpi module
provides an ACPI LED device which controls most of the LEDs (the Bay LED
is 4), and when my configuration has stabilised I'll set the LED up via
the suspend script. With the CPU on low speed (if it matters) and the
LED off the power consumption in Suspend mode is around 580mW.

I hope this helps someone else with their T23, because they are very
nice machines, and quite versatile; this one seems to be able to deal
with most forms of networking and mass storage pretty much out of the
box. It looks as if the software to control full ACPI functionality has
only stabilised within the last few months (ie: mid-2005), so if you
have problems, try upgrading to IBM's latest BIOS and EBIOS, and a
kernel >=2.12. With luck, the next version or so of the S3 driver will
be free of its hang problem.

==Suspending==
To suspend you can either do a simple {{cmdroot|echo disk > /sys/power/state}} (recommended) or use the [http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/old-site/swsusp/sysvinit-2.76-v2-for_swsusp-v5.tar.gz patched SysVInit] and call {{cmdroot|swsusp}} or {{cmdroot|shutdown -z now}}. As the {{path|/proc/acpi/sleep}} interface becomes deprecated in newer kernels you should NOT use the old {{cmdroot|echo -n 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep}} anymore.

Ideally, you would do this from a script like {{path|/etc/acpi/actions/hibernate.sh}}. It has proven to be a good idea to shutdown the following processes/drivers within the script before you do the actual suspend:
*any running mysql server
*the linuxant driver may require to be stopped as well ({{cmdroot|dldrstop}} does the trick).

Afterwards you might want to enable them again, as well as run a script that does necessary configurations according to the ac power state.
Furthermore, the system clock is not readjusted automatically, so you will probably also want the do that from that script (i.e. by restarting your systemclock bootup script).

If the sound output is silent after resume, the following commands might help to get sound to work again without reloading any modules:

==S5 vs. S4 state==
Finally you should take note that swsusp does not set the ACPI S4 state. Instead it goes to S5. This means that the machine itself doesn't know that it was suspend rather than shutdown. Hence you can i.e. boot a parallel installed other operating system and resume your linux session later, as long as you don't touch the swap partition the image was saved to.

Note: There are some problems with the driver since kernel 2.6.17 (at least on a Z61p, Z61m). After an ifdown && ifup it doesn't work anymore. A possible workaround is to build the tg3-driver as a module and reload it when this problem occours. (Adding ''pre-up modprobe tg3'' and ''post-down rmmod tg3'' to the corresponding section in /etc/network/interfaces works fine.) Rebooting the machine would also be possible.

The T43 with a stock Linus 2.6.18.1 kernel does not have any problems.
