How to install the IBM Ultracam II driver

84.191.144.30:

1. First you have to get the [[Ultracampatch | kernel patch for the ultracam]].

: The patch is for Kernel 2.4.20, so if you are using any other 2.4 series kernel you might have to adjust the patch to work.
: On 2.6 the structure of the usb source tree changed a lot, a patch is available for 2.6.10 at: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-usb-devel&m=111802180804300&w=4

2. Change to the drivers directory in the kernel source tree: {{cmdroot|cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/drivers}}

3. Apply the patch: {{cmdroot|patch -p0 -i <path to saved patch-file>}}
: If the patch was successful, you should see the following:
patching file usb/Config.in
patching file usb/Makefile
patching file usb/ultracam.c
patching file usb/usbvideo.c

4. Go up one level to the kernel source root: {{cmdroot|cd ..}}

5. Configure the kernel: {{cmdroot|make menuconfig}}

6. Activate the following Options as modules (set to <M>):
Multimedia devices -> Video For Linux
USB support -> Support for USB
USB support -> Preliminary USB device filesystem (auf [*])
USB support -> UHCI Alternate Driver (JE) support
USB support -> USB IBM Ultraport II Camera support
: In case some of them should already be activated (<*> oder <M>), just let them as they are.
: Exit the configuration and save your settings.

7. Recompile the kernel modules: {{cmdroot|make dep && make modules modules_install && depmod -ae}}.

{{NOTE|If you are using non standard kernel modules they have to be recompiled afterwards as well.}}

8. Now you can do a {{cmdroot|modprobe ultracam}} and launch "xawtv".

If everything works, you should see yourself now. The driver is quite unstable and you might have to unload and reload the ultracam module every now and then.
The Access IBM Button is a button situated in the upper left corner of the keyboard on modern ThinkPads. It is intended to be a means of quick access to help and support. Technically it is nothing else than a button that can be configured to launch a certain piece of software.

On earlier models this button is labelled "ThinkPad".
</div>
|}
__NOTOC__
== Linux support ==
Under Linux, the IBM ThinkPad(tm) special keys can be enabled using [[tpb]].

I.e., to make pressing the Access IBM Button launch ntpctl, add the following line /etc/tpbrc file:
THINKPAD    /usr/bin/X11/xterm -T ntpctl -e ntpctl

To make pressing the Access IBM Button launch the ThinkWiki homepage, add the following line:
<nowiki>THINKPAD    /usr/bin/firefox http://www.thinkwiki.org</nowiki>

See the [[tpb]] page and the [[How to get special keys to work | ThinkPad special keys HOWTO]] for more information.

== {{Windows}} support (2000 or XP) ==
If you want to customize the program that is launched when the Access IBM button is pressed while
the machine is running Windows (2000 or XP) you can change the following registry entry:

<code>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\8001</code>

Here are the default values:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\8001]
"File"="C:\\Program Files\\IBM\\Access IBM\\\\aibm.exe"
The ThinkLight is a little LED light integrated into the top edge of the display frame in the A, R, T and X ThinkPad models. It illuminates the ThinkPad's keyboard so that one can type in the dark without using an external light source. The ThinkLight can be controlled via the Fn-PageUp key combination or via ACPI on some of the newer models.
Note that the ThinkLight is not available on the G series ThinkPads.
</div>
|}
==Linux Support==
Controlling the ThinkLight with the keyboard works on all systems since it relies on the BIOS exclusively. Just press {{key|Fn}}{{key|PageUp}} to toggle its state between on and off.

Support for controlling the light with ACPI is provided by [[ibm-acpi]]. After installing it, a simple
:{{cmdroot|echo on > /proc/acpi/ibm/light}}
switches it on and a
:{{cmdroot|echo off > /proc/acpi/ibm/light}}
switches it off again.

This allows one to control the light in scripts. Unfortunately, no known ThinkPad comes with a light sensor (yet). ;)
To all parameter keywords should be assigned the full path to the executables supposed to be started on key press.
The exectable provided for the CALLBACK keyword should take the parameters given in parentheses and act according to them.
If you want to use xmodmap for the HOME, SEARCH, MAIL, FAVORITES, RELOAD, ABORT, BACKWARD, FORWARD and FN keys you should
provide a XEVENTS=off in your tpbrc.

===xmodmap configuration===
xmodmap enables you to edit the modifier map and keymap tables that are used to translate keycodes into keysyms.
Understood? Well, basically it allows you to give the X server a dictionary for the translation of keycodes like "97" into more human readable synonyms like "Home". This way xmodmap allows you to make the special keys of your keyboard known to X applications.

Usually you should write your keycode-keysym associations into the file ~/.Xmodmap. This file is usually read by the X session startup scripts of your system, so that the mappings automatically get included everytime you run the X server.

The ~/.Xmodmap lines for our purpose are in the form of
keycode <keycode> = <keysym>

The following table shows the keycodes generated by the Thinkpad special keys and sensible keysyms to assign them to.
{| border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2"
|+ keycodes and recommended keysyms
! key !! keycode !! keysym
|-
| {{ibmkey|Backward|#494949}} || 234 || XF86Back or F21
|-
| {{ibmkey|Forward|#494949}} || 233 || XF86Forward or F22
|-
| {{ibmkey|Home|#494949}} || 178 || XF86HomePage
|-
| {{ibmkey|Search|#494949}} || 229 || XF86Search
|-
|-
| {{key|Fn}} || 227 || F35
|}

(In case you want to use the browser keys in Firefox, you will have to assign the F21 and F22 or similar keysyms to them.)

Note: if you are running tpb you might need to add the line XEVENTS=off into your tpbrc to stop it from grabbing the key events and allow them to get through to X instead.

==Example Applications==
===Web Browsers===
====Firefox====
(First of all thanks go to Ryan Barrett for writing the little howto on his blog.)<br />
To have firefox make use of the browser keys you need to modify one of its files.
To do this you will first need to extract it from the browser.jar archive. Do...

:{{cmdroot|cd <firefox-directory>/chrome}}<br />
:{{cmdroot|unzip browser.jar}}

The file of interest is content/browser/browser.xul. Edit it...
:{{cmdroot|vi content/browser/browser.xul}}

Look for the '''<keyset id="mainKeyset">''' section and add the following lines within...
<key id="goBackTP" keycode="VK_F21" command="Browser:Back" />
<key id="goForwardTP" keycode="VK_F22" command="Browser:Forward" />
Now save the file and repackage the browser.jar archive...
:{{cmdroot|zip -rD0 browser.jar content/browser/}}

That's it.

Another interesting Page on Firefox is http://dqd.com/~mayoff/notes/thinkpad/dqdnavkeys/ It uses different key mappings (F19 resp. F20) but a ready .xpi is provided which is pretty comfortable.

====Firefox and KDE====
KDE provides Khotkeys. Get into the KDE system controls (kcontrol) and just assign keyboard inputs "Alt+Left" and "Alt+Right" to the two browser keys. That way, you don't need to mess around with the firefox internals. Maybe, you'll need to set up .Xmodmap as described above in order to assign them the symbols XF86Back and XF86Forward.

====Opera====
However this isn't simple configration file, you can set your browser manualy.<br />
Go to <i>Tool > Settings > Mouse and keyboard > Keyboard settings > Edit > Browser Window</i>. There add F21 - Back and F22 - Forward. Now you can surf using your TP keys ;-)

===Window Managers===
====fvwm====
To get the Backwards and Forwards keys to cycle through pages in the virtual desktop, add this to your .fvwmrc:
Key    XF86Back     A      A   Scroll     -100000   0
Key    XF86Forward  A      A   Scroll     +100000   0
If you use multiple virtual desktops, you could instead use the keys to flip between them by using GotoDesk.

====pekwm configuration====
You can make the two browser keys switch workspaces in pekwm, by adding the following two lines to the .pekwm/keys file:
KeyPress = "Mod1 XF86Back" { Actions = "GoToWorkspace prev" }
KeyPress = "Mod1 XF86Forward" { Actions = "GoToWorkspace next" }

====pwm====
Another example how to use these two keys to switch between pwm tabs. These two lines should be added to $HOME/.pwm/keys-default.conf or /etc/pwm/keys-default.conf:
kbind "Back", "switch_rot", -1
kbind "Forward", "switch_rot", 1

===Other Uses===
====Console tools configuraton====
To make the prev page / next page keys (located at the cursor keys on my T42p) useful in console, add this to your keymap (/etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz in Debian):
keycode 158 = Decr_Console
keycode 159 = Incr_Console

{{footnotes|
#if there are more than one tool listed, one is sufficient
}}

==Introduction==
If you have an P4-class Celeron based Thinkpad (like the R40e in my case) you can use the p4-Clockmod scaling option from 2.6 kernels to set cpu speed. Use any userspace daemon like powernowd or cpufreqd to get dynamic speedstepping to work.

==Kernel config==
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_USERSPACE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_TABLE=y
CONFIG_X86_P4_CLOCKMOD=y (for R40e, p4-class celeron, other tp's might need something different here)

make sure to have the sys interface built within your kernel
CONFIG_SYSFS=y

==using the sysfs interface==
use the sys-interface to discover and set available frequencies

make sure to have sysfs mounted:
add
none            /sys            sysfs           defaults                0      0
to your /etc/fstab (if not already there)

get available freqencies:
:{{cmdroot|cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies}}
275000 550000 825000 1100000 1375000 1650000 1925000 2200000

set frequency:
:{{cmdroot|echo 825000 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed}}

You can use powernowd (easier) or cpufreq (more settings) to have cpuspeed dynamically managed.

==Powernowd==
for powernowd use the sys interface to set the min and max speed:
:{{cmdroot|echo 825000 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq}}
:{{cmdroot|echo 2200000 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq}}
:{{cmdroot|/etc/init.d/powernowd start}}

On my R40e frequencies below 825000 make x almost unusable (mouse jumps around, until cpuspeed rises).

==cpufreqd==
In order to use the dynamic GPU clock-scaling similar to what X.org has, you need to use the radeonfb kernel module. You'll need to enable the '''CONFIG_FB_RADEON''' in your kernel configuration. If setup correctly you should see something like the following in your kernel log:
----

I've used the trackpoint as mentioned above with the following additional section for an USB mouse:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier      "USB Mouse"
Driver          "mouse"
Option          "SendCoreEvents"        "true"
Option          "Device"                "/dev/input/mouse1"
Option          "Protocol"              "ImPS/2"
Option          "ZAxisMapping"          "4 5"
EndSection

However, I've used /dev/input/mouse0 for the trackpoint and /dev/input/mouse1 for the USB mouse.

As of Kernel 2.6.10, the middle USB mouse button (used for pasting) doesn't work anymore (same config as for Kernel 2.6.9, execpt for the newly included ibm-acpi support).

Anyone one else with the same problem or with a solution?
Any word on 2.6.11 support? I've seen the treads about this being included in the main tree but I guess it didn't make it. Any sign of a patch?

----

Elsewhere on the linked-to-blog ( http://stephen.evanchik.com/index.cgi/2005/01/index.html ), there is mention of a 2.6.11 patch.  It's for 2.6.11-rc2, but should be worth a try.  There're even newer patches here ( http://people.clarkson.edu/~evanchsa/software/kernel/patches/ ).

----

Thanks, this patch applies cleanly to 2.6.11:
http://people.clarkson.edu/~evanchsa/software/kernel/patches/trackpoint-2.6.11-rc3.patch-1
seems to work for me.
== scrolling with firefox ==

Firefox has an option to do smoothscrolling when you push down the third mouse button :)

== Middle Button Scrolling ==

On http://people.clarkson.edu/~evanchsa/ I read, that middle button scrolling is no longer supported. I couldn't find any additional information on this topic!? Anyone knows why support for mb scrolling is dropped?

--[[User:Cryptom|CrypTom]] 17:46, 18 May 2005 (CEST)
The scroll support was buggy. It is now done through the Xorg input driver, so there's no need to support it anymore.

I removed all the configuration instructions from this page and created [[How to configure the TrackPoint]] from it. (Actually that page should be extended to tell about tp4d configuration as well.) Doing so, i also cleaned up some of the outdated information on this page.
=== IBM TrackPoint ===
The TrackPoint is IBMs name for the stick that sits between the g, h an b keys of the keyboard. It is used as a pointing device and hence as an alternative to an external mouse or a touchpad. What sets it apart from devices found in notebooks of other manufacturers is that it has no moving parts. It works using a solid state strain gauge. Its tap-to-click feature, which means that you can tap the stick to do a left click instead of using the left mouse button, is also handy.
</div>
|}

==Linux Support==
The TrackPoint uses the PS/2 interface so it is supported by the standard psaux mouse input driver included in the Linux kernel.

Note that the "IMPS/2" driver of the X server is incompatible with most TrackPoints. You'll have to use "PS/2" in the protocol option of your input section if your mouse pointer always jumps to the lower left corner of the screen. This seems to be solved with the T4x generation of ThinkPads.

However, to make use of advanced features like configuring sensitivity or enabling "tab-to-click" there are different solutions available depending on the kernel you are using.
* For 2.4 type kernels it is recommended to use the [http://www.slac.stanford.edu/~strauman/pers/tp4utils/ Linux Trackpoint utilities].
* For 2.6 type kernels there is a [[Patch to enable advanced trackpoint configuration]] available. If you are using GNOME you might want to use [http://tpctl.sourceforge.net/configure-trackpoint.html configure-trackpoint] as a graphical frontend to it.

*Have a look at [[How to configure the TrackPoint]].
{{NOTE|
Prior to kernel 2.6.11 these files were located in <tt>/proc/trackpoint</tt>.
From 2.6.11 on this is no longer the case. Instead use <tt>/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0</tt>.

(The newer form is used throughout this document.)
}}
|}

==General Configuration==
The configuration options are reflected by the files you can find in <tt>/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0</tt>. See the [[Patch to enable advanced trackpoint configuration|TrackPoint driver page]] for a complete list.
Configuration is done by echoing the appropriate values into these special files.
{{HINT|If <tt>$ echo XX > file</tt> isn't working for you, try <tt>$ echo -n XX > file</tt> instead}}

==Most common Features==
The most common settings are '''Press to Select''', '''sensitivity''', '''speed''' and '''scrolling'''.

===Press to Select===
Press to Select allows you to tap the control stick which will simulate a left click. You can enable this feature by typing the following in to a terminal (you may need to be root):

:{{cmdroot|echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/ptson}}

Press to Select should now be enabled. You can disable it in a similar manner:

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/ptson}}

===Sensitivity & Speed===
Adjusting the speed and sensitivity of the TrackPoint requires echoing a value between 0 and 255 into the appropriate file. For example, for a speed of 120 and a sensitivity of 250, type the following into a terminal:

:{{cmdroot|echo 120 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/speed}}
:{{cmdroot|echo 250 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/sensitivity}}

Feel free to experiment with your settings until you find a combination that is comfortable.

===Scrolling===
====Using a kernel prior to 2.6.11====
The scrolling action is essentially the same as is used in the TrackPoint Windows drivers. To enable this feature, type the following in to a terminal (you may need to be root):

:{{cmdroot|echo 1 > /proc/trackpoint/scroll}}

Then press the middle button and push the stick up and down to scroll. Similarly, to disable scrolling:

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /proc/trackpoint/scroll}}

====Using the X server (kernel 2.6.11+)====
The scroll setting has been removed from the trackpoint driver in kernel versions 2.6.11 and above. Scroll emulation should now be handled in the X server. First do:

:{{cmd|echo -n 0 >  /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/middle_btn_disable}}

Then, for versions of Xorg since ~Oct '04, add these lines to your TrackPoint configuration section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option          "EmulateWheel"          "on"
Option          "EmulateWheelButton"    "2"

Now restart X and hold down button 2 and move the mouse to scroll, or just press and release button 2 for a middle click.

For older versions of Xorg or for Xfree86 (/etc/X11/XF86Config) try this:

Option          "Emulate3Buttons"       "true"
Option          "EmulateWheel"          "true"
Option          "EmulateWheelButton"    "2"

Now restart X and hold down button two and move the mouse for scrolling. To get a middle click, press buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously.

==Soft Transparent Mode==
If you wish to connect a special device to the external PS/2 port, you should consider using "Soft Transparent Mode" so that the TrackPoint controller does not interpret any commands sent to the external PS/2 port. You can enable soft transparent mode by typing the following in to a terminal:

:{{cmdroot|echo 1 > /proc/trackpoint/transparent}}

Disabling soft transparent mode is similar:

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /proc/trackpoint/transparent}}

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/ptson}}

===Sensitivity & Speed===
Adjusting the speed and sensitivity of the TrackPoint requires echoing a value between 0 and 255 into the appropriate file. For example, for a speed of 120 and a sensitivity of 250, type the following into a terminal:

:{{cmdroot|echo 120 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/speed}}
:{{cmdroot|echo 250 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/sensitivity}}

Feel free to experiment with your settings until you find a combination that is comfortable.

===Scrolling===
====Using a kernel prior to 2.6.11====
The scrolling action is essentially the same as is used in the TrackPoint Windows drivers. To enable this feature, type the following in to a terminal (you may need to be root):

:{{cmdroot|echo 1 > /proc/trackpoint/scroll}}

Then press the middle button and push the stick up and down to scroll. Similarly, to disable scrolling:

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /proc/trackpoint/scroll}}

====Using the X server (kernel 2.6.11+)====
The scroll setting has been removed from the trackpoint driver in kernel versions 2.6.11 and above. Scroll emulation should now be handled in the X server. First do:

:{{cmd|echo -n 0 >  /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/middle_btn_disable}}

Then, for versions of Xorg since ~Oct '04, add these lines to your TrackPoint configuration section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option          "EmulateWheel"          "on"
Option          "EmulateWheelButton"    "2"

Now restart X and hold down button 2 and move the mouse to scroll, or just press and release button 2 for a middle click.

For older versions of Xorg or for Xfree86 (/etc/X11/XF86Config) try this:

Option          "Emulate3Buttons"       "true"
Option          "EmulateWheel"          "true"
Option          "EmulateWheelButton"    "2"

Now restart X and hold down button two and move the mouse for scrolling. To get a middle click, press buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously.

==Soft Transparent Mode==
If you wish to connect a special device to the external PS/2 port, you should consider using "Soft Transparent Mode" so that the TrackPoint controller does not interpret any commands sent to the external PS/2 port. You can enable soft transparent mode by typing the following in to a terminal:

:{{cmdroot|echo 1 > /proc/trackpoint/transparent}}

Disabling soft transparent mode is similar:

:{{cmdroot|echo 0 > /proc/trackpoint/transparent}}
