Yes the hdaps driver is in the 2.6.14 kernel, but support to park the heads quickly and freeze the disk queue (to prevent the heads from getting un-parked) is not. There is some disagreement into how that should be implemented.

In other words, the hdaps driver for the moment is rather useless, unless you want to use it to play games.

The exectable provided for the CALLBACK keyword should take the parameters given in parentheses and act according to them.
If you want to use xmodmap for the HOME, SEARCH, MAIL, FAVORITES, RELOAD, ABORT, BACKWARD, FORWARD and FN keys you should
provide a <tt>XEVENTS=off</tt> in your {{path|/etc/tpbrc}}.

For Debian users, tpb is started from {{path|/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90tpb}}.

===xmodmap configuration===
xmodmap enables you to edit the modifier map and keymap tables that are used to translate keycodes into keysyms.
Understood? Well, basically it allows you to give the X server a dictionary for the translation of keycodes like "97" into more human readable synonyms like "Home". This way xmodmap allows you to make the special keys of your keyboard known to X applications.

Usually you should write your keycode-keysym associations into the file {{path|~/.Xmodmap}}. This file is usually read by the X session startup scripts of your system, so that the mappings automatically get included everytime you run the X server.

The {{path|~/.Xmodmap}} lines for our purpose are in the form of
keycode <keycode> = <keysym>

Another interesting Page on Firefox is http://dqd.com/~mayoff/notes/thinkpad/dqdnavkeys/ It uses different key mappings (F19 resp. F20) but a ready .xpi is provided which is pretty comfortable.

====Firefox and KDE====
KDE provides Khotkeys. Get into the KDE system controls (kcontrol) and just assign keyboard inputs "Alt+Left" and "Alt+Right" to the two browser keys. That way, you don't need to mess around with the firefox internals. Maybe, you'll need to set up {{path|~/.Xmodmap}} as described [[#xmodmap configuration|above]] in order to assign them the symbols XF86Back and XF86Forward.

However this isn't a simple configration file, you can set your browser manually.<br />

When using a 2.6 kernel with ACPI enabled, the card is not recognized properly. In fact the kernel finds the card and tries to enable it but gives an error message in dmesg output.

This is a problem with the PCI power management and resource management, which occurs when the ACPI subsystem is enabled.
It is tracked in [https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=158725 issue 158725] in RedHat's Bugzilla and [http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1188 issue 1188] in the kernel.org Bugzilla. The former contains tentative kernel patches.

Try one of the following kernel parameters (in that order):
*<tt>nolapic</tt> (disables support for local apic)
*<tt>acpi=nopci</tt> (disables PCI resource control of the ACPI subsystem)
*<tt>acpi=off</tt> (completely disables ACPI, should always work)

===Alternative to disabling ACPI===
It is possible to get the ethernet controller of the 3Com combo card working with ACPI enabled by using the setpci command. Since it requires an IO port address that may change each boot, this Perl script will help to automate things. It has only been tested under the 2.6.12-rc5-mm2 and 2.6.12-rc6 kernels with the 3c59x driver compiled as a module. It may break with different versions of the lspci command (tested with 2.1.11).

To all parameter keywords should be assigned the full path to the executables supposed to be started on key press.
The exectable provided for the CALLBACK keyword should take the parameters given in parentheses and act according to them.
If you want to use xmodmap for the HOME, SEARCH, MAIL, FAVORITES, RELOAD, ABORT, BACKWARD, FORWARD and FN keys you should
provide a XEVENTS=off in your tpbrc.

===xmodmap configuration===
xmodmap enables you to edit the modifier map and keymap tables that are used to translate keycodes into keysyms.
Understood? Well, basically it allows you to give the X server a dictionary for the translation of keycodes like "97" into more human readable synonyms like "Home". This way xmodmap allows you to make the special keys of your keyboard known to X applications.

Usually you should write your keycode-keysym associations into the file ~/.Xmodmap. This file is usually read by the X session startup scripts of your system, so that the mappings automatically get included everytime you run the X server.

The ~/.Xmodmap lines for our purpose are in the form of
keycode <keycode> = <keysym>

The following table shows the keycodes generated by the Thinkpad special keys and sensible keysyms to assign them to.

Note: if you are running tpb you might need to add the line XEVENTS=off into your tpbrc to stop it from grabbing the key events and allow them to get through to X instead.

To have firefox make use of the browser keys you need to modify one of its files.
To do this you will first need to extract it from the browser.jar archive. Do...
$ cd <firefox-directory>/chrome
$ unzip browser.jar
The file of interest is content/browser/browser.xul. Edit it...
$ vi content/browser/browser.xul
Look for the '''<keyset id="mainKeyset">''' section and add the following lines within...

No save the file and repackage the browser.jar archive...

Another interesting Page on Firefox is http://dqd.com/~mayoff/notes/thinkpad/dqdnavkeys/ It uses different key mappings (F19 resp. F20) but a ready .xpi is provided which is pretty comfortable.

===pekwm configuration===
This is just a small example of what else you can do with your extra keys.<br />
I configured the two browser keys of my T41p to switch workspaces in pekwm, by adding the following two lines to the .pekwm/keys file:
KeyPress = "Mod1 XF86Back" { Actions = "GoToWorkspace prev" }
KeyPress = "Mod1 XF86Forward" { Actions = "GoToWorkspace next" }

===pwm configuration===
Another example how to use these two keys to switch between pwm tabs. These two lines should be added to $HOME/.pwm/keys-default.conf or /etc/pwm/keys-default.conf:

===opera configuration===
However this isn't simple configration file, you can set your browser manualy.<br />
Go to <i>Tool > Settings > Mouse and keyboard > Keyboard settings > Edit > Browser Window</i>. There add F21 - Back and F22 - Forward. Now you can surf using your TP keys ;-)

===fvwm configuration===
To get the Backwards and Forwards keys to cycle through pages in the virtual desktop, add this to your .fvwmrc:

If you use multiple virtual desktops, you could instead use the keys to flip between them by using GotoDesk.

This Page describes how I replaced the standard IBM BIOS Bootsplash (The one with the Thinkpad- and Pentium M-Logo), without access to Microsoft Windows or a floppy drive. Although I just did this procedure as described, I wrote down the commends as I remembered, so beware.

=== Getting the Files ===
I got the bios upgrade diskette from the IBM site. It was an .exe-file... but
no, no Windows executable, an OS/2 executable (well, it's IBM after all).
And OS/2 executables don't run in wine. So I did an <tt>apt-get install dosemu
dosemu-freedos</tt> (for non-debian-users: Get dosemu and freedos somewhere
and make it work somehow).

With dosemu, I could run this executable. But this program unfortunately
needs a floppy drive to write to. So I dig into the linux toolbox and
find: The loopback device. A <tt>dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/floppy.bin bs=1024
count=1440</tt> creates a file for the floppy, a <tt>losetup /dev/loop0 /tmp/floppy.bin</tt>
makes it look like a block device, and this block device is what I put
in the dosemu configuration as the floppy disk device. Now I can run
the extractor executable (<tt>dosemu something.exe</tt>) and it will happily make /tmp/floppy.bin a floppy image.

=== Adding the custom image ===
This floppy image can be mounted (<tt>mount -o
loop,umask=000 /tmp/floppy.bin /mnt/tmp</tt>), and now I can read the
readme.txt. To replace the logo file, I create a 16bit 640x480 BMP
file, save it as logo.bmp and run <tt>logo.bat</tt>. Just kidding, you can't just run
batch files in linux, but - after testing the bitmap, which I just
didn't do - that batchfile only runs <tt>prepare.exe logo.scr</tt>. This program
won't run in dosemu, but in wine: <tt>wine prepare.exe logo.scr</tt>. Now there should
be a new logo.mod. If so, you are set, <tt>unmount /mnt/tmp</tt> and go on.

=== Fake a floppy ===
Now I need to put the image on a floppy and boot. Since I don't have a
floppy (and no floppy drive after all), I use a CD-R (a CD-RW, actually, for the
cheap ones, like me) and burn it like that:
<tt>cd /tmp; mkisofs -b floppy.bin floppy.bin | cdrecord -dev=<irgendwas> -</tt>

=== The exciting part ===
After this worked, I rebooted from the cdrom and the IBM tool
started. After confirming that I checked a few things, I got asked
whether I want to replace the boot splash image. Yes, I do. It will then
flash the BIOS, which will take about a minute. A hint: Since you know that
any problem during this minute might break your thinkpad, if you have
weak nerves, go and do something else instead of watching a
non-changeing screen.

=== Coda ===
Suddenly the laptop turns itself off. Hopefully, it was finished - in my
case it was. When booting, I got my bootsplash picuture (with some ugly
text "To abort booting, press Enter" or something in the lower left
corner). Unfortunately, you don't see it really long, but it's better
than some advertisement, so it was worth it.
