hi

Don't know what I'm doing but what I'm trying to do is to express a problem I have in the hope someone here can help me.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 which came preinstalled with Windows XP Pro which I have updated to SP3. It also has the Rescue and Recovery utility. The computer is only about 1 month old.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 creating a dual boot system where about half hard drive is dedicated to Win and the other half to Ubuntu.

Upon start-up of the computer it gets to GRUB2 menu. The GRUB2 is specifically "GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4". The menu contains:

1-Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-16-generic

2-Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-16-generic (recovery mode)

3-Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic

4-Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-16-generic (recovery mode)

5-Memory test (memtest86+)

6-Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)

7-Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda1)

8-Windows NT/2000/XP (on /dev/sda3)

Number 8 is the Rescue and Recovery partition.

As I understand, RnR now covers NOT the Ubuntu, but only covers Windows XP. Is that right?

Also: When I am running Windows XP, and I try to open Rescue and Recovery program, it will not open at all. In the beginning after installing Ubuntu, it used to open and crash when I tried to backup, but now it won't open at all.

So I guess Ubuntu has created a problem to it? I also have made many (careful) registry changes in XP though I don't think these should be the problem.

I am a beginner in Thinkpad computers and in Linux, though I do have some knowlege in Windows XP.

Please help me resolve this issue: Is the Ubuntu installation the cause for disabling the RnR? How can I make RnR functional (at least for XP) while keeping the Ubuntu partition?

Thanks very much.
