The template can't contain nested templates for useful stuff like Template:path, making it of limited usefulness. How about creating Template:BEGIN_HINT and Template:END_HINT? Template:HINT will invoke both, but more complex cases can use the underlying templates to avoid the need for nesting. Likewise for WARN and NOTE.

Doesn't work. MediaWiki seems to autoclose the tags within one template before including it. This means that a tag can't be kept open over several templates. Which means, the content given in the parameter would be outside the box.

I'm seeing the same problem as you, and i'm thinking about a solution for a while already, but didn't come up with something suitable, so far. However, if i change the template layout (and make it use a wikitable, like i.e. the Todo template does) it could work.

I'll try that soon.
