ThinkPad Edge 13" Series

This page gives an overview of all ThinkPad Edge 13" Series related topics. The Edge 13" exists both in Intel and AMD processor models.

ThinkPad Edge 13" (Intel)

Machine Type

  • 0196, 0217

Standard Features

Distribution Support (0196 model)

This section covers the 0196 model with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Common to all distributions should be the following two issues:

  • the trackpad's synaptics multitouch hardware isn't detected properly
  • the built-in microphone does not work by default

Refer to the linlap entry [1] for details.

(K)Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

See: Installing Kubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on a ThinkPad Edge 13" (Intel)

Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu 10.10 out-of-the-box supports pretty much all this machine's hardware, including:

  • power (frequency scaling, hibernate)
  • networking (wifi and ethernet)
  • card reader (tested with SDHC card)
  • webcam
  • HDMI (video & audio (need to select the "HDMI Output" in Sound Preferences))
  • combo headphone/mic jack (same kind of connector as many smartphones)
  • bluetooth
  • trackpad (but only in "pseudo-multitouch", see above)

What doesn't work:

  • inbuilt microphone (see above)

OpenSUSE 11.3

OpenSUSE 11.3 supports this model out-of-the-box, including 3D desktop effects, hibernate, built-in webcam and wireless.

A workaround to enable the the built-in microphone is to add the following line at the beginning of /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=olpc-xo-1_5

Distribution Support (0217 model)

This section covers the 0217 model with an Intel Core i3 processor.

At least some models feature a Realtek 8188CE wireless MiniPCI express card which only just recently got official support in Linux (as of December 2010). Realtek provided an out-of-kernel driver for a longer while but users have reported limited success and some system instability when using it. The Linux kernel developers are now working with Realtek on properly [| integrating it in the Linux kernel from version 2.6.38]. Some distributions including Ubuntu have backported or included the original out-of-kernel driver in earlier kernels. It is possible to manually build and use the rtl8192ce driver from compat-wireless with earlier kernels, and once the 2.6.38 kernel becomes common this card may start consistently working out of the box.

The hardware resembles the 0196 model so the issues mentioned for that model may also apply here.

Linux Mint Debian Edition

At least the basic features like suspend/resume, frequency scaling, wired networking, HDMI video and trackpad/trackpoint work out of the box. The wireless network interface is not supported by default, but it is possible to make it work with the compat-wireless driver and the default linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. Remaining hardware is not yet tested.
